Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening  is one of the most popular cosmetic teeth treatment procedures. Many studies carried out in various countries confirm that whitening of healthy teeth by hydrogen peroxide is safe, it does not change the structure of the tooth and surrounding tissues.

Teeth can be whitening in two ways: at home, and in the office of the odontologist (use Laser Smile). The teeth must be healthy or cured.

Important! The professional mouth cavity hygiene is carried out before the whitening of the teeth!
Teeth whitening at home (using the bleaching trays) – the odontologist takes the patient’s teeth prints. Using this mould, the bleaching trays are produced – the transparent splint that tightly covers the teeth. Using the special material, after the teaching by the odontologist, a person carries out the teeth whitening at home for 10-14 nights. The teeth whitening gel is injected into the tray that is put on the teeth. The active component – carbamide peroxide – disintegrates, the oxygen gets into the enamel and decomposes dangerous units. The tooth structure does not change, it only gets brighter.

How to use these trays:

    1. Inject the whitening gel into the reservoirs of the external surface (inner segment) of the tray.
    2. After brushing the teeth and using the interdental floss, put the trays on the teeth, adapt them and their edges well.
    3. Follow your doctor’s instructions. In case the teeth sensitivity appears, discontinue the whitening and consult your odontologist.
    4. Clean the trays with a moist tooth brush and cool current of water. Keep them in the box (in the dry and cool place).
    5. Keep the whitening material from the heat and direct sun rays. If you use them for a long time or you have discontinued the treatment, then keep them in the refrigerator. Pay attention to the expiry date.

Means of precaution:

•    Do not use domestic bleachers. Use only specially manufactured and certified whitening gels or material;
•    It is not allowed to whiten teeth for pregnant or breast-feeding women;
•    It is not allowed to whiten teeth with the worn-off enamel, in the case of the gums inflammation, periodontitis;
•    Food products or drinks with many acids may increase the teeth sensitivity;
•    In the course of teeth whitening, it is recommended not to smoke or use any other tobacco products;
•    If you have any questions, please contact your odontologist.
The effectiveness of whitening depends upon the thickness of the enamel, its natural hue, age, nutrition, hygiene and bad habits.
It is important to know:

•    Fillings, crowns and other things do not change their colours. Aesthetic filling must be carried out not earlier than two weeks after the teeth whitening.
•    Professional mouth cavity hygiene must be performed before the teeth whitening.
•    In the course of teeth whitening it is not allowed to use food products or liquids that might change the colour of the teeth (red wine, strong coffee, tea, beet, blueberries, Brandy, etc.)

The so-called home teeth whitening system is the most popular in the world. It is a transparent splint and gel, the active component of which is carbomide peroxide. The gel can be of different concentration: 10 per cent, 15 per cent, 20 per cent ("Opalescence" or others). It may contain other materials, such as potassium nitrate, fluoride ions. The gel is swampy and clammy, so that it would not leak from the tray.

Teeth whitening in the office (by the laser) – the teeth are whitened in a single time, the procedure lasts about 1 hour. The gel of bigger concentration is used for whitening, the result is fast. The laser, acting as an activator, enhances the affect of the whitening gel, therefore the maximum effect is obtained during a short time.
Usually, a single procedure is enough, after which dental sensitivity can be felt for 24 hours. After such procedures the teeth stay white from 3 to 3 years. It depends upon the life style of a person: smoking, coffee, black tea, red wine, etc. have influence upon the colour of the teeth. If one uses such things too much, it may be necessary to whiten teeth additionally.

The course of the procedure:

  1. The gums are isolated by a special protective film
  2. The teeth are covered with a whitening material of the strong concentration
  3. The gel is activated by the laser
  4. The gel is washed off, the dental protection device is taken off
  5. To reduse a sensivity whitened teeth covered by a special gel.

The advantage of the laser over the teeth whitening in the chair without the light source or using other light sources before the whitening (whitening lamps) is that the laser beam is co-ordinated with the photo-active gel – all the laser beam’s energy is used to activate the hydrogen peroxide at once and it is absorbed; the tooth tissues are not heated. Whereas the whitening lamp specter is wide, therefore the tooth tissue is also heated and the activation is performed unevenly. Because of it, Lasersmile is definitely the most effective and fastest teeth whitening method.

It's important to remeber that teeth whitening effet is always individual. Usually, peroxide effectively lightens teeth, the teeth become lighter by 1-2 tones according to the dental colour palette. It depends upon the tooth structure, the enamel thickness, the pigment type and how precisely the patient follows the doctor’s instructions. There are cases when the teeth are hard to whiten.
Teeth whitening can not be done if:

  1. The teeth are damage by a tooth decay
  2. The gums are inflammated or damage by periodontitis
  3. The teeth are sensitive or they have the worn-out enamel
  4. During the pregnancy or breast feeding women
  5. Persons under the age of 18

Important! Fillings and crowns do not whiten, thats why they should be changed or corrected after the whitening.

It is not recommended to whiten the teeth on one’s own, without the supervision of the doctor, as only the specialist may evaluate how much the colour of the teeth has altered.
